The Shoton Festival, also known as the Yogurt Festival, is one of the most important festivals in the Tibetan calendar. The celebration marks the end of the 100-day meditation period of the Tibetan Buddhist monks and is usually held in the month of August. .At Drepung Monastery, in the western suburbs of Lhasa, a giant Thangka painting of the Maitreya Buddha is unveiled on the hill behind the monastery on the first day of the festival.
