Many cities around the world now have sidewalks planted with trees. Sidewalk gardens greatly expanded on the idea, with a variety of plants and low bushes, along with trees, all in a blocked off and maintained area. San Francisco`s Friends of the Urban Forrest planted their first tree, in Noe Valley, in 1981. As a community based group, FUF has helped neighborhoods get community sidewalk gardens started all around San Francisco.
