When initially opened in 1854, the German Benevolent Society formed the German Hospital for the German immigrants to San Francisco during this cities Gold Rush years. The hospitals founder had a proposal, for what would become the countries first Health Maintenance Organization, where the German citizens, than any of the cities citizens, could pre-pay just one dollar a month, and they would be guarantied a hospital bed, should they ever need it.The German hospital became the basis for what was to become Ralph K. Davies Hospital.Davies Hospital, being next to the Castro neighborhood, developed specialized care and treatments for the AIDS patients that was so affecting the whole community.
