The French, who started arriving in 1851, and just in time to miss most of the San Francisco Gold Rush, had their own section of town, sometimes referred to as San Francisco`s French Quarter, centered around Belden Place. Josiah Belden was not only San Jose`s first Mayor, but also owned a sizable chunk of land along San Francisco`s Market street, which he later sold to Charles Crocker.As seen in September 2021, with gate open.
