Human rights activist, Ida Nudel was one of the most prominent refuseniks, also called Prisoners of Zion, Jews who pleaded to leave the Soviet Union and emigrate to Israel. With much emotion and joy, she expresses her heartfelt gratitude during a press conference at Ben-Gurion Airport in Lod, Israel, after a flight from Russia on a private airplane owned by American industrialist Armand Hammer. Nudel was imprisoned and endured harsh punishment and became a global symbol of resistance, a source of admiration and inspiration. Among those on the dais are Absorption Minister Ya`akov Tsur, Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, and her sister Ilana Fridman who emigrated to Israel in 1971. Among her strongest supporters were film actresses Liv Ullmann and Jane Fonda and the United States and Israeli governments. Nudel died in Israel on September 14, 2021 at the age of 90.
