Mount Velebit Is A Region Where Wildlife Is Really Returning Stock Photo

Velebit is the largest Croatian mountain and the richest in natural attractions. Velebit is protected as a Nature Park and with its 2000 sq. km is the largest protected area in Croatia. There are a number of other smaller territories within the boundaries of the Nature Park, including two National Parks: Northern Velebit in the Lika-Karlovac region and Paklenica in Dalmatia. On this mountain there is a whole list of natural attractions that are the most valuable natural treasures of Croatia. That is why this mountain, with a length of 150 km, is protected as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, until now the only one of its kind in Croatia. Velebit is the most significant Croatian mountain, both in terms of the richness of flora and fauna, and the number of endemic plants. The dramatic coastal landscapes with their steep, barren cliffs, deep canyons, waterfalls, and open, uninhabited plains also have an interesting link to contemporary European film history. In the 1960s, the famous German “Winnetou” Cowboy and Indian-movies were produced in and around Velebit, which provided ideal landscapes to represent the Wild West.
