Cave 8 is badly damaged but contains a historically significant 5th-century Sanskrit inscription in the back wall of the cave as well as its 4.5 feet 1.4 m lotus carving on the ceiling. The Udayagiri Caves, one of India`s most important archaeological sites, are twenty rock-cut caves in Madhya Pradesh, about 57 km from Bhopal, dating from the 5th century CE. They are notable for their ancient iconography of Vaishnavism Vishnu, Shaktism Durga and Matrikas and Shaivism Shiva.
