Title
The former Sacred Heart Church San Francisco, 9. #231040048
Description
Having opened in 1897, Sacred Heart Church survived both the 1906 earthquake and fire as well as the 1989 Loma Prieta quake. It was because of the Loma Prieta quake that the city required all unreinforced masonry buildings, like Sacred Heart, to be retrofitted. Due to the diminished congregation, instead of paying the high cost of the retrofit, the archdiocese decided to sell the whole complex instead. For a time there was even a roller rink inside. Then between vandalism and lack of maintenance, it was finally resold, and then sold again. Now hopefully it is again in negotiations to be turned into housing. The church itself has been given Landmark status. As seen September 2021.
