Description
Ailsa Craigââ¬Â¦ 1,109 feet 338 metres at its highest point and covering an area of around 240 acres. Uninhabited since 1990. Some of the large and various fine granite was mined to make curling stones between the early 19th century and 1971. Ailsa Craig was used as a refuge for Roman Catholics during the Scottish reformation. It was also used as a prison during the 18th and 19th centuries. Being almost half way between Belfast and Glasgow, it is sometimes referred to as ââ¬ËPaddyââ¬â¢s Milestoneââ¬â¢.
