Also called giant orchid, sugar cane orchid or queen of the orchids, Grammatophyllum speciosum is the largest orchid species in the world, with specimens growing up to 2 tonnes. The common name, Tiger Orchid is given after the striking brown & yellow flower patterns resembling tiger stripes. Native to Southeast Asia, the large, clumping, epiphytic orchid grows in crotches of large trees on exposed areas of the lowland tropical rainforest. It is also often grown as an ornamental orchid in gardens and parks for its attractive foliage and large flowers.
