Description
Pictured is lion relief detail in the cloister courtyard of the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon, Portugal. Construction began in 1501 and was completed 100 years later. The architect was Diogo de Boltaca. The monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture in Lisbon. It was classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The lion is the heraldic symbol of Saint Jerome.
