Description
Plan of the principal seaport of Asia Minor, a terminus of the Bagdad Railway. Smyrna was a Greek city located at a strategic point on the Aegean coast of Anatolia. Due to its advantageous port conditions, its ease of defence and its good inland connections, Smyrna rose to prominence. The name of the city since about 1930 is ðzmir. Izmir is a city on Turkeyââ¬â¢s Aegean coast. Known as Smyrna in antiquity, it was founded by the Greeks, taken over by the Romans and rebuilt by Alexander the Great before becoming part of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Social History.
