Description
Pictured is a closeup of the triangular pediment of the Queen Maria II National Theater on Rossio Square in Lisbon, Portugal. It is topped by a statue of Renaissance playwright Gil Vicente , considered the founder of Portuguese theatre. The tympanum of the pediment is decorated with a sculpted relief showing Apollo and the Muses. The building was constructed between 1842 and 1846 with a Neoclassical design by Italian architect Fortunato Lodi. The Theatre building as as a Property of Public Interest in 1928, and has been reclassified as National Monument since 2003.
