The Victorian era 1837-1901 greatly emphasized customs and practices associated with death. So, the period gave birth to elaborate tombstones and grave markers. The cemeteries appeared more like parks as they had such lavish and decorated gravestones, resembling statues rather than the traditional gravestones. The tree was the most popular gravestone image in the nineteenth century up to 1860. It clearly emphasized the mourning and sadness of those left behind. Leading causes of death in 1800`s - Tuberculosis, Dysentery-diarrhea, Cholera, Malaria, Typhoid Fever, Pneumonia. Diphtheria, Scarlet Fever, Meningitis, Whooping Cough. This symbol dates back to its use in grand Victorian-era cemeteries. The clasped hands indicate the relationship between the person who has passed away and the loved ones left behind. It symbolizes loss, but also re-union as the two meet again in the next life.
