Description
Phra Pathommachedi or Phra Pathom Chedi, `the first holy stupa`, is located in Nakhon Pathom, one of the oldest cities in Thailand, about 55km south of Bangkok. With its height of 120m, the Sri Lankan styled bell shape stupa is also said to be the tallest Buddhist chedi in the world. The present structure was built by King Mongkut in the 19th century over an older stupa. There has been a sacred site at Phra Pathom Chedi since the reign of the emperor Ashoka on the Indian subcontinent.
