The Scaligero Castle in the historical centre of Sirmione town, Lago di Garda. #234368924
Description
The Scaligero Castle of Sirmione is a fortress from the Scaligera era, the access point to the historic center of Sirmione. It is one of the most complete and best preserved castles in Italy, as well as a rare example of marine lake fortification. The castle is bathed on all sides by the waters of Lake Garda, and on one of these sides the dock was built shortly after the construction of the castle, which once represented the refuge of the Scaligera fleet. The walls and the three massive major towers are characterized by the dovetail battlements that distinguish every Scaligera construction: behind these three towers emerges the imposing keep, 47 meters high, under which the cells intended for prisoners were located. Sirmione is a comune in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy northern Italy. It has a historical centre which is located on the Sirmio peninsula that divides the lower part of Lake Garda.
