Description
Haemorhous mexicanus. The House Finch. Non-migratory. They were native to the Western United States until the 1940`s when some were accidentally released into the wild on Long Island, NY. Now, they take up residence along the East coast as well. Ground foragers, mostly seeds, they love our bird feeders, especially if they are filled with black oiled sunflower seeds. This bird is a male with its striking reddish purple head and breast. The females are more subtly colored.
