Description

Pictured are statues of cherubs flanking the symbol of Seville on the facade of the Seville Town Hall facing Plaza de San Francisco. NO8DO is a motto that is omnipresent and can be seen in the Serville flag, public works, urban furniture, bus shelters, drain covers and even benches. There is no historical certainty to the origins of this motto, with multiple theories. The most popular is that it came from King Alfonso X who was left to live in Seville with his faithful after his son Sancho led a successful rebellion. Shortly before his death in 1284 in gratitude to the city of Seville he gave the city this emblem. It is a phonetic expression of No me ha dejado which means `has not abandoned me`. In the emblem, NO8DO, the center symbol 8 represents a skein of wool, a Madeja. This completes the heiroglyph, No-Madeja-Do No me had dejado. There are multiple other less popular legends.
