Stuffed crocodile hanging above the Puerta del Logarto or Door of the Lizard in the Seville Cathedral, Spain. #237499335
Description
Pictured is a stuffed crocodile hanging above the Puerta del Logarto or Door of the Lizard in the Seville Cathedral, Spain. The door leads from the Court of the Oranges into the cathedral. According to legend the Emir of Egypt wanted the hand of the beautiful Berenguela, the illegitimate daughter of King Alfonso X. To this end he sent rich and exotic gifts for the king and princess, including a live crocodile. In the tale the crocodile either lived a long life and converted to Christianity, or more likely languished in captivity and died. In either case, a wooden model of the beast was carved and covered with its skin and hung here. And the Emir never got the girl.
