The synagogue columns at Capernaum, Galilee, Israel #237919047
Description
The synagogue at Capernaum is a fantastic structure of white stone and ornate columns, probably built in the late third or fourth century AD. Below its foundation, archaeologists have discovered basalt walls of a previous synagogue dating to the first century AD. Many scholars attribute this synagogue to the original structure built by the Roman centurion stationed there Luke 7:3-5.The synagogue is on the shore of the Sea of Galilee at the ancient fishing village of Capernaum. Itââ¬â¢s here where Jesus taught ââ¬Åas one who had authority, and not as the scribesââ¬Â Mark 1:21. The synagogue at Capernaum is also where Jesus was confronted by a demoniac while teaching Mark 1:21-27, Jesus healed the servant of the centurion Luke 7:3, and Jesus gave his sermon on the bread of life John 6:35-59.
