In this monochrome rendering Charles McGee, a fighter pilot with a record 409 combat missions in World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars, arrives for the New York City premiere of the film `Red Tails`, a story of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, at the Ziegfeld Theatre on January 10, 2012. The red tails were the group of Black pilots trained at Tuskegee, Alabama who served as escorts protecting U.S. bombers from enemy attack. They proudly tell that they never lost an airplane they protected. They fought for racial equality at home by fighting for freedom abroad. McGee received an honorary promotion to 1-star Brigadier General days following his 100th birthday. One of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, He died in his sleep in his Bethesda, Maryland home on January 16, 2022 at the age of 102.
