It has extremely powerful jaws and protrusions on its shell, similar to the rough, ribbed skin of an alligator. It has sideways-pointing eyes and a long hooked beak on the upper jaw. It lives in rivers, ponds, and canals in the southeastern United States. It is the largest freshwater turtle in the world.
