The Suriname cherry or pitanga, Brazilian cherry, Suriname cherry, Cayenne cherry. It is the fruit of the Suriname cherry (Eugenia uniflora L.), a dicotyledon from the Myrtaceae family. It is originally from Brazil. The word “pitanga” comes from the Tupi-Guarani, which means red. It has the shape of globular and fleshy balls, red (the most common), orange, yellow or black. On the same tree, the fruits can vary from green, yellow and orange to intense red, depending on the degree of maturation. It is a fruit that has many nutrients such as vitamins A, B and C, calcium, phosphorus, iron and phenolic compounds such as flavonoids, carotenoids and anthocyanins with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antihypertensive properties, which help to combat premature aging.
