Centuries old large stone statues, moais, are found at several locales throughout Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island. Rapa Nui is a small island province or territory of Chile, over 2,000 miles west of the South American mainland. It is situated in the Pacific Ocean, in eastern Polynesia. The monolithic human figures rest on stone platforms called ahu. The carvings were made sometime between the years 1250 and 1500.
