Description
The Butt of Lewis Lighthouse on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, was engineered by David Stevenson in 1862 and is the windiest spot in the UK according to the Guinness Book of Records.A plaque in the lightroom indicates that the present equipment was installed in 1905. The lighthouse was manned by three keepers with their families, it became automatic in 1971. Flashing white light every 5 seconds, it is constructed of Red Brick 37m high, with 168 steps, has a range of 21 nautical miles, and has no public access, and is one of over 200 sited around the wild coastline of Scotland
