Description

Mallard duck, or just Mallard, Anas platyrhynchosnchos, is mostly recognized by the iridescent green of the head. But this is of the adult male, the drake, only. The adult female, the hen, is more mottled brown. The juvenile, after about two months after hatching, the male now has an orange bill and red-brown breast feathers while the female has a black bill and brown breast feathers. They can also start to fly at two months. As seen at Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park 10 February, 2022.
