Description
Originally erected in the 1870s as the adjacent district court`s penitentiary, the complex served as such throughout five political systems: the German Empire, Weimar Republic, 3rd Reich, GDR and FRG. From 1952 to 1989, the prison was jointly used by the Deutsche Volkspolizei and the East German secret service `Staatssicherheit` Stasi who also operated their Erfurt precinct headquarters here.
