Title
Sitka spruce Pica sitchensis, 1. #245116983
Description
This spruce is named for the part of Alaska where it is most abundant. From there, it can be found on the western North America coast down to Northern California. Growing to a height of 330 ft 100 m and at least 16 ft around 5 m, this is the largest spruce anywhere in the world. As impressive as that may sound, there are still four other, even bigger conifers. Not only are a number of quality musical instruments made from this wood, both for sound quality with its light weight, the Wright Brothers used it for their plane, which was a practice continued straight through WW1.As seen in the San Francisco Botanical Gardens of Golden Gate Park 6 April 2022.
