Gardening in Arizona: Budding, Blooming Agave Pelona and Barrel Cacti #245429944
Description
Agave Pelona forms a rosette of narrow green leaves, often tinged with red. Leaves have white thornless margins and long spines at their ends. Once in its lifetime - here in the middle of April - the plant produces an up to 10 feet - 3m - tall flower spike . In this same garden patch are six barrel cacti; in the background: different agaves, yuccas, palo verde - and mesquite trees. All plants are indigenous to the Sonoran Desert. The Agave Pelona occurs only in three small mountain ranges of the extremely arid northwestern Sonora, Mexico. The photo was taken in the Desert Botanical Garden of Tempe/Phoenix.
