Brazilian ornamental tree with large and showy flowers, this species produces fruits similar to avocados, but with a very hard shell. It is difficult to find them still closed on the ground: they open still at the foot, in the highest branches, bursting the bark after many days of exposure to the sun. Thus, when ripe, they are ready to be sniffed by the birds that, like the wind, are responsible for dispersing the seeds. From hummingbirds to parakeets and parrots, many birds fill their nests with kapok - a very comfortable way to keep eggs warm and protected from moisture.Present in squares and flowerbeds in Goiás, Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Mato Grosso do Sul, paineira is rustic and has fast growth, which makes it a strong candidate for the recovery of degraded areas. Its trunk, which can exceed 25 meters in height, has pointed protrusions similar to thick thorns, a feature that facilitates the identification of the tree. Light, soft and of low durability, the wood is used in canoes, crates and clogs, in addition to composing cellulosic pulp, the material most commonly used in the manufacture of paper.
