Totem Poles at Langley Controversy #248684447
Description
Location is Langley on Whidbey Island in Washington state. One pole was carved in 1966 by a 17-year-old non-native boy. A photo from the Whidbey Record newspaper at the time confirms it. The carving includes Native imagery and is respectful toward the native culture. The other pole added in 1975 tells a colorful storyof drinking, partying, and chasing women. The `Thunderbird` that sits atop the pole represents the cheap booze that goes by the same name. That carver, now 83, confirms the story. Local tribes are asking for the pole to be removed.
