Description

Mandu or Mandavgad is an ancient city in the present-day Mandav area of the Dhar district. It is located in the Malwa and Nimar region of western Madhya Pradesh, India, at 35 km from Dhar city. In the 11th century, Mandu was the sub division of the Tarangagadh or Taranga kingdom. This fortress town on a rocky outcrop about 100 km 62 mi from Indore is celebrated for its architecture. This gate is mentioned many a time in the military history of Mandav. It got its name from Tarapur village situated on the lower field of Nimar region. The first attack on Mandav by the Mughals was made through this gate and Humayun`s forces reached till the entry point. Situated in front of the stairs of this gate`s wall was Torandwar which was secured by huge walls on both sides. Under Dilawar Khan a second arched gate was constructed on the interior side between 1406 and 1407, the same is mentioned on an inscription near the gate.Between the gates walls, there is a serpent-shaped path and a closed arched ceiling. When Akbar came to Mandav, he ordered the construction of a gate on the western side. Another inscription near the gate says that the path to the fort was very difficult to travel, which is why Akbar`s representative Mohammed Hussain took care of the required improvements in 1014 according to the Islamic almanac.
