Description
The San Francisco gold rush of 1849 actually started on 24 January 1848. That is the exact date gold was first discovered, and that was at Sutter Mill. This caused a sudden, new influx of both peoples and wealth into California, that the United States government quickly made it a brand new state in 1850, then established brand new mint, in San Francisco in 1854.In only 20 short years, that building space was outgrown, and this new one was built, on 5th Street between Market and Mission, with that old one eventually being torn down. This mint then operated from 1874 until 1937, when the current one opened on Hermann Street.As seen 22 June 2022.
