Description
Pictured is part of the process of recycling cardboard in the Mokattam village, nicknamed `Garbage City`, in the Greater Cairo Urban Region, Egypt. It is a settlement with approximately 20,000 inhabitants, 90% of whom are Coptic Christians who support themselves by collecting the garbage of Cairoââ¬â¢s twenty million residents and then sorting through it, achieving an astonishing high recycling rate. They are called the Zaballeen and use donkey-pulled carts and pickup trucks to transport the garbage they collect to their homes where they sort and sell the sorted garbage. A Caterpillar front loading tractor is moving sorted cardboard to a machine that will bundle it for sale.
