Description

Pictured is part of the process of recycling cardboard in the Mokattam village, nicknamed `Garbage City`, in the Greater Cairo Urban Region, Egypt. It is a settlement with approximately 20,000 inhabitants, 90% of whom are Coptic Christians who support themselves by collecting the garbage of Cairo’s twenty million residents and then sorting through it, achieving an astonishing high recycling rate. They are called the Zaballeen and use donkey-pulled carts and pickup trucks to transport the garbage they collect to their homes where they sort and sell the sorted garbage. A Caterpillar front loading tractor is moving sorted cardboard to a machine that will bundle it for sale.
