The Ministry of Culture of Peru declared as Cultural Patrimony of the Nation the Festival and Pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Lord of Locumba in the province of Jorge Basadre, department of Tacna, which is celebrated in the month of September.On September 12, the entrance of the different religious dance companies, known as religious societies, is made to pay homage with various songs and dances to the image of the Lord of Locumba.That same day, the pilgrimage is made from Tacna to Locumba, in which the pilgrims travel 80 kilometers in approximately 22 hours, carrying some religious symbols to accompany their journey, such as images of the Lord of Locumba, crucifixes, rosaries, habit, among others. other elements.Finally, the pilgrims arrive at the Sanctuary of the Lord of Locumba to witness the festive mass that takes place on the central day, September 14, and they also receive the blessing that is part of the liturgical ceremony.It also highlights the preparation of various typical dishes such as pork marinade, spicy tacneña, guinea pig chactado, threads or `crowns of Christ`, Cuaresmillo and alfajores.It should be noted that devotees from all over the south of Peru as well as from the north of Chile participate in the festivity, since the devotion to the Lord of Locumba transcends borders and unites both peoples.
