Early San Francisco was filled with a lot of interesting and rowdy places. That is the one very big thing that makes the What Cheer Hotel even more unique.It was a hotel for men only, most of whom were sailors. Alcohol was strictly forbidden. Yet the owner, Robert Woodward, was so popular with his guests, they would keep bringing him gifts from around the world. One of the more famous guest, although still not yet known, was Ulysses S Grant, in August 1854.It was because of all of these gifts that the hotel offered the cities first free library, and museum.Unfortunately, the building was burned and completely destroyed by the earthquake and fire of 1906.
