Protesters Demand Dissident Death Probe in H.K. #25220131
Description
Thousands of people have taken part in a protest march to demand a thorough investigation into the death of the mainland dissident, Li Wangyang. Organisers said 25,000 people were involved in the march which started in Chater in Central and ended at the Central Government's Liaison Office in Western. The demonstrators, mostly dressed in black, said they did not believe that Mr Li had committed suicide in hospital, as stated by the mainland authorities. Mi Li, who was 62, had spent 21 years in jail following the crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in Tiananmen Square in 1989. He is said to have lost his sight and hearing because of the mistreatment he received while in jail. Mr Li's body was cremated yesterday reportedly without the consent of his family, three days after his suspicious death.
