Tile Museum: Museo Nacional do Azulejo Interior in Lisbon #252714639
Description
The National Tile Museum, or Museo Nacional do Azulejo in Lisbon, Portugal displays the magnificent legacy of Moorish tile making. It is set in the Mother of God Convent which was founded in 1509, It displays the tile making of Portugal from the 15th century up to modern times. The style is opulent Baroque with paintings amidst the world of golden, gilded wood and panel upon panel of tiles. The sad irony is that in a fit of religious and cultural intolerance, Roman Catholic King Manuel I expelled all of his country`s Moors in 1496. Yet without this Muslim community`s contributions to what had been a relatively tolerant Iberian land, such artistic heritage could scarcely have existed at such a high level.
