Demonstration for Religious Pluralism in Jerusalem in 1987 #253304653
Description
Casually attired secular Jews were part of a demonstration in Jerusalem, Israel in 1987. Their sign was advocating for cultural freedom. The ultra-Orthodox Jewish rabbis were quite upset at the pushback by the capital`s secular militants protesting against what they felt was the devout minority getting a disproportion amount of municipal funds and stifling others attempts to broaden the religious and cultural pluralism in the city. Within an hour, scores more demonstrators from each side showed up and police launched tear gas grenades to disperse both sides to avert bloodshed. Decades later, the demographics of Jerusalem have changed markedly as the population has grown and shifted the balance more in the direction of the majority Ultra-Orthodox and Modern Orthodox population.
