The town was a railroad town, with its own newspaper, two saloons, three hotels, a livery stable, and other businesses. During the Civil War, the Union Army held the city for approximately three years. Also during the Civil War General U.S. Grant established a ââ¬ÅContraband Campââ¬Â of thousands of former enslaved people, providing shelter, education etc. prior to the Emancipation Proclamation.
