Pictured is a is a pair of limestone lions and marble capitals in the Cloisters in Fort Tyrone Park in Washington Heights, Manhattan, New York City. The lions are alert and both guarding prey under their paws. They originally supported columns that would have rested on their flat backs. They are early 13th century. The marble capitals, shafts and bases that flank the door are French, from the 12th century. On the far left is a 12th century marble capital with birds atop a shaft and base. Governed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cloisters specializes in medieval art and architecture with a focus on Romanesque and Gothic periods.
