Description
Pictured is a Circa 1500 oak high-relief sculpture titled `The Dormition of the Virgin` in the Cloisters in New York City. It is from the Workshop of Tilman Heysaker. The twelve apostles missing Saint Thomas who arrived too late, are gathered at the Virgin`s deathbed. Saint Peter, holding a book, officiates. Next to him an apostle sprinkles holy water. At the foot of the fed, one apostle perfumes the air with incense. This high-relief sculpture was once painted and was the central scene of an altarpiece. The Cloisters is governed by the New York Metropolitan Museum and specializes in medieval art and architecture, with a focus on the Medieval and Gothic periods.
