Chiesa e Commenda di San Giovanni di Pre Genova #256847341
Description
The church and the Hospitaller Commandery of San Giovanni di Prè constitute one of the most significant architectural ensembles of the Genoese Middle Ages: the complex was occupied by the Knights of Jerusalem. In the Commenda there were the quarters of the Knights and the hospital that housed the pilgrims; the Commenda was connected directly to the church through an internal portal. The church seems to date back to 636 when the Genoese - to preserve the memory of the holy places, which had fallen into the hands of the Turks, built a church on the model and with the title of that of the Holy Sepulcher near the port of the suburb of Prè.
