Hypholoma fasciculare, commonly known as the Sulphur Tuft, Sulfur Tuft or Clustered Woodlover, is a common woodland mushroom, often in evidence when hardly any other mushrooms are to be found. This small gill fungus grows prolifically in large clumps on stumps, dead roots or rotting trunks of broadleaved trees. The Sulphur Tuft is bitter and poisonous; consuming it can cause vomiting. The sulphur-yellow false calf grows on stumps, on the ground near stumps and on rotten wood of deciduous and coniferous species. It is often found in large groups. The sulphur-yellow false calf is found everywhere from the end of May to late autumn on rotting wood, on stumps and on the ground near stumps, sometimes on the trunks of living trees. Prefers hardwoods, but occasionally can be found on coniferous. The false calf is sulfurous-yellow and poisonous.
