Similar to a sauna or steam room, Native Americans used a temescal or sweat house that had spiritual purification purposes as well as physical.On this approximate location of what is now Montgomery and Sacramento Streets in San Francisco, was once a temescal used by the local people. A simple building with a hole dug about six feet deep for a smoky fire and covered with brush, after getting all sweaty they would jump into pool that was then near by.
