Even by San Francisco standards, Leidesdorff Street is unusual, and no one is really sure why. It may go back to before the 1906 Earthquake Fire, which caused a lot of records to be lost forever.It has been speculated that Leidesdorff Street even goes back to when San Francisco was still Native American land, following the natural stream that was still there at the time.This is why, if you do follow it today, not only is Leidesdorff Street not a straight line, but in places, the very width of the street changes mid block.The Long Wharf was from before all the landfill in the area, and the area today of Leidesdorff and Commercial Streets held a long wharf going out into the bay, where all kinds of ships bringing all kinds of goods and people to and from San Francisco for the whole rest of the world, at the time, could safely come right up to the shore line and dock.As seen 14 September 2022.
