The pau-de-brasil or pau-de-pernambuco Caesalpinia echinata Lam., also called arabutã, ibirapiranga, ibirapitá, ibirapitanga, orabutã, pau-de-tinta, pau-pernambuco and pau-rosado, is a tree legume native to the Atlantic forest. in Brazil.In folk medicine, the trunk bark, cooked, is used to fight diarrhea and dysentery. Powdered, it serves to strengthen the gums, and tea from the leaves seems to have an abortifacient effect. By Law 6,607, of December 7, 1978, pau-brasil was declared the national tree of Brazil. It is a leguminous tree native to the Atlantic Forest in Brazil.
