When California became the 31st American State, in September 1850, and despite the Gold Rush, it was still a fairly sparsely populated state. In October 1854, the very first California State Fair was held, in San Francisco. It was in a then music hall that was on Bush Street near Montgomery.That is shocking to believe today, seeing an area dominated by skyscrapers in the cities financial center. The next year, the fair was held in the state capital of Sacramento, and a different city each year after that, until Sacramento built an exhibition hall, in 1859 and 60, which is now the official location of the fair every year since, except during WW2 when it was canceled altogether.As seen 5 October 2022.
