Corsie Sistine in Rome #259922621
Description

After the restoration carried out by the ASL Roma 1 with funds from the Lazio Region, the Corsie are open to citizens every Thursday, a symbolic place of medical art and an example of Capitoline civil architecture. The Sistine Lanes were born in 1475 at the behest of Pope Sixtus IV as an extension of the ancient Arcispedale built in 1100 in the place where the Schola Saxorum stood, commissioned in 727 by the King of Wessex Ina to welcome and treat pilgrims visiting the holy places of Rome and from which the term `Sassia` derived, in the following centuries. The building, designed by Baccio Pontelli and the sculptor Andrea Bregno, is one of the first examples of civil and non-religious Renaissance architecture, with its two large rooms, able to accommodate hundreds of sick people, connected by an octagonal lantern that houses the ciborium, the only Roman work by Andrea Palladio. The walls are decorated with over sixty fresco scenes made by artists of the Umbrian-Lazio school and by disciples of Melozzo, Ghirlandaio, Pinturicchio and Antoniazzo Romano. The lanes are also enriched by two majestic portals by Bernini and Bregno.
