Art of ancient Egypt, this is considered one of Egypt's largest and oldest mosques, which was built between AD 876 and AD 879 by an Abbasid governor sent from Baghdad to rule over Egypt. With a spiral minaret inspired by the Great Mosque of Samarra and crenelated arcades surrounding a vast open prayer space, the 6-acre (2.5-hectare Ibn Tulun Mosque is one of Cairo’s longest-surviving Islamic monuments. It's simple, serene shape was completed in 879AD for Ahmad Ibn Tulun, who made it the center of his new capital city.
